Highlights for the 2005 festival include a number of Russian visitors, including Valery Gergiev and his Kirov Opera Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi as well as Russian-flavoured programmes from the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra and Akbank Chamber Orchestra. Mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter gives a recital, while Concerto Köln & Sarband, Alan Curtis' Il Complesso Barocco, Christopher Hogwood - reunited with the Academy of Ancient Music (which he founded) - and the English Concert with Richard Eggar at the harpsichord all contribute to a healthy period-instrument strand.

Completing the Russian theme, and closing the festival, Les Ballets de Montecarlo give two performances of Prokofiev's ballet Cinderella.

Throughout the summer the other Istanbul festivals incorporate theatre, film and jazz as well as several other special projects that run simultaneously. The aim here is to include in its programming the finest examples of artistic creativity in all disciplines of art from both Turkey and abroad, along with seminars, conferences and lectures.

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts is responsible for this cultural overload and has been recognised with the Trophée Internationale des Arts et de la Culture by the Institut International de Promotion et de Prestige of UNESCO. There couldn't be a better time to be in this ancient city.
